Anxiety is ever more prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic impacting all demographics.  Still, this condition, more chronic in its course, has been an epidemic in the U.S. with globalization through social media.

Anxiety

Depression is more episodic in its course although can be chronic depending on the individual's personal history.   It is insidious.  Fortunately, the U.S. Federal Government has been increasing infrastructure and supports for depression and suicide prevention.

Depression

Stress is the body's effort to return to homeostasis or the body's most steady state in the face of a real or perceived threat.  Chronic stress can lead to physical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and chronic pain along with mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Stress
PMDD

PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder)  is a severe and debilitating form of Premenstrual Syndrome.  It is a disease that impacts the mental, physical, and interpersonal systems.  Individuals of reproductive age who have PMDD have an increased risk of suicide.

PRE MENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER

Each individual's nervous system is different based on genetic and environmental factors.  Some people's nervous systems calibrate differently depending on the stressor(s).

Emotional Regulation

Dr. Spano has a particular clinical interest in women’s mental health, including the diagnosis of Autism and ADHD in girls 16+.  Autism in girls is under recognized and often misdiagnosed.
